Drawa or haratine

Inhabitants of the Drâa oases, who constitute a socially and ethnically distinct class of workers. Most Drawi or Haratin work in the palm groves as sharecropper for the Sherifian elite. Those who migrate to the coastal cities or Marrakech are often employed in menial jobs. The black skinned Berbers who pejoratively are called Haratin, prefer the name Drawi, referring to the Drâa River. They are presumably descendants of sub-Saharan Africans who were left behind by slave traders and are often considered not to be ‘real’ Moroccans by some of their fellow countrymen.
