Igoudar are fortified granaries found all across North Africa. They were built by the Berbers to store and protect their crops, livestock, oil and other valuables. In times of warfare and plundering they offered protection against aggressors of all sorts. Most Igoudar in Morocco are found in the Anti Atlas range. Igoudar are typically built on hilltops and have the appearance of medieval fortresses. Inside the buildings consist of dozens of small cells each one owned by a single household. An appointed gatekeeper, responsible for its maintenance, guards the Agadir.
This part of the project is currently in progress and the first results will be on view shortly.
